• THIS IS TURKEY
  • WHY TURKEY

  •

Formerly known as ANATOLIA and regarded as the 'cradle of civilization' Turkey is a land of treasures, offering an exotic blend of culture, tradition and renowned hospitality. This, coupled with miles and miles of sandy beaches, a fabulous climate, spectacular mountain ranges, ancient sites, hidden gorges and exciting cosmopolitan cities are just a few of the reasons why one visit to this enchanting country is never enough!

Few countries can boast such a fascinating history and abundance of archaelogical treasures. Geographically diverse with snow-capped mountains in the east, lush green valleys and rich fertile agricultural lands in the west with a temperate climate in the north, the southern coast of Turkey is hot and dry with the spectacular Taurus mountain range stretching the length from Oludeniz to Adana.

       OUR LOCAL AREA

This stretch of the Turkish coast line is known as the Turkish Riviera or Turquoise Coast and stretches from Fethiye in the west right through to the Syrian border in the east.

Without doubt one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline anywhere in the Mediterranean. The area from Fethiye to Kemer is known as Lycia and has Turkey's most dramatic coastline with mountains falling away into crystal clear seas.

Summer temperatures average 30-40c with a winter average of 15c. Rainfall is mainly during the months from December to February. The area is popular with European visitors and there is a growing resident community. (picture above entrance to butterfly valley by sea)

       FETHIYE

Once a great Lycian city dating back to the 6th Century B.C., traces of the ancient settlement can still be seen. The most magnificent of these is the Temple Tomb of Amytas perched imperiously on the face of the cliff east of the old city, as well as many scattered sarcophagi and the ruins of an old castle believed to have been constructed by the Knights of St John. Recent excavations have uncovered an ancient amphitheatre in the heart of the town. (picture below sheltered waters of Fethiye bay)

    Fethiye Harbour and Marina

    Fethiye Harbour

Fethiye also enjoys a large marina where many impressive privately-owned yachts and sail boats are berthed year round. The town is lined with shops galore as well as a maze of little side streets offering many hidden treasures! (picture below right rock tombs Fethiye)

Since Fethiye is the main market town of the area you will find all the shops you need including banks, change offices, ATM's, main post office, chemists and supermarkets. Also a visit to the local market held on Tuesday is an opportunity for a bargain not to be missed!

       HISARONU & OVACIK

The villages of Hisaronu & Ovacik are located on a plateau 1,000 ft above sea level under mount Babadag (father mountain).

All year round there are magnificent views of pine clad mountains. During the summer months there is usually a cooling breeze coming up from the sea.

Fethiye the main market town of the area is about 7 kms and the famous beach and lagoon at Oludeniz is about 4 kms from the villages. (picture left Hisaronu village nestling in the mountains)

Hisaronu & Ovacik are resort villages in their own right and Hisaronu village is the centre for local nightlife which comes alive after dark with its many gift shops, lively bars and restaurants catering for every taste. A medical centre and private hospital services are available.

Local dolmus (mini bus) services run at regular intervals during the summer months into Fethiye and to the beach and lagoon at Oludeniz.

    KAYAKOY

Mentioned in the 'Lonely Planet', this unique village was once a wealthy and important trading place with around 4,000 stone houses and a population of approximately 25,000.  Important Greek scholars, traders and merchants lived here until 1922 when there was an exchange of Turks in Thrace and the Greek-origin people in Anatolia.

For a number of years Levissi, as it was known remained deserted, however small numbers of people have been drawn to Kaya by its haunting yet captivating beauty and there are now around 2,000 people who live in and around the village.

Due to its historical importance the Village of Kaya, known locally as the 'Ghost Village' is now a protected area but visitors are allowed to wander around freely and lose themselves in the magic and mysticism that is Kaya.

    OLUDENIZ

    Oludeniz - Belcekiz Beach

One of Turkey's most famous and photographed beaches, with crystal clear turquoise waters and gentle lapping waves, where the line between sea and sky blends into one. Mother nature's finishing touch was to surround this 'heaven on earth' with a spectacular mountain and pine forest backdrop. (picture right Oludeniz bay)

At the far end of the beach you will find the 'lagoon' set inside a national park area. Not visible from the open sea the lagoon is very sheltered with still , warm waters, absolutely perfect for those looking for a bit of escapism!

Further along from Oludeniz is another beach called 'Kidrak', quiet and secluded with a woodland area perfect for picnics.
